British painter, Rebecca Campbell is exhibiting Hidden Meanings, a series of oil paintings on wood panel at Jonathan Cooper, Park Walk Gallery from 26th June. This is her 4th solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition consists of 32 paintings and are oil on wood panel.

Rebecca Campbell has developed a highly imaginative pictorial language, taking influences from Indian Mughal miniatures, Persian textiles and medieval tapestries to create her own unique decorative style. The subjects of her paintings, birds, plants, and animals are brought to life by her intense use of colour and strong sense of design. Campbell ‘manipulates the picture plane and uses shallow space to deceive the eye’, enhancing the playful nature of her narratives.

‘A resplendent peacock wanders through brightly coloured tulips-vanity (European), ambling elephants amongst the baobab trees – wisdom (African), a garden set deep in the forest, paradise (Persian), and Cranes- longevity (China)’. (Rebecca Campbell, March 2008)

The Hidden series is based on the theme of symbolism in different cultures and is a culmination of the stylistic and cultural references Campbell as experienced from her travels in Europe, India, Africa, and most recently China in October 2007. Campbell explores the importance of symbolism as a universal language in different cultures and religions, highlighting the way birds, plants, animals are used to represent various ideas, often to humorous effect.
